2009 was a tough year for a lot of people. Money was tight for many, and most people were happy to just hold on to the jobs that they had. The U.S. changed (for better or for worse, depending on your views) as we got used to a new president, and old tensions stirred in the Middle East with violent protests in Iran and continued attacks in Afghanistan. While we look forward to starting 2010 on the right foot, all of the Mixr communities are answering one question about 2009: What was important?

As this question pertains to the beauty industry, I could go on about a groundbreaking product or hot trend, but I won’t. I think that the real importance of this industry in 2009 was to make people feel stronger at a time when a lot of things were crumbling around us. More »

Lash Growth Make-Up With celebs like Brooke Shields preaching the benefits of longer and stronger lashes via products like Latisse, the idea of spider-like lashes is no longer a distant dream for many. There are now serums, lash treatments and moisturizing mascaras (like those from DiorShow) that offer the chance to have va-va voom lashes even if you weren’t born with them. More »

2009 was the year for expressing yourself through your nail polish. And bright colors it was. OPI even came out with a whole line of brightly colored polishes that were sure to be noticed.

There are a few reasons why bright nail polish colors were so popular in 2009. First of all, the economic outlook was pretty dreary. Since lots of us were feeling pretty “blah” in other areas of our lives, we wanted to brighten things up a bit with bright, colorful nail polishes. No matter what your mood is, brightly colored nails can lift your spirits in a second. More »

No time for the nail salon with all the running around? Wanna try the “do it yourself” approach for your New Years parties? Always mess up the color when you do it yourself? Yeah, me too. Hence why I LOVE using polish that dries in a flash. (And it really, truly does). Read on for my own personal favorites! More »

No, green eyeshadow and eyeliner weren’t all the rage in 2009. We’re talking green as in environmentally-friendly. 2009 was all about being nice to the environment and we learned lots of ways to lessen our carbon footprint. Lots of us didn’t even realize our makeup could have an impact on the environment, and how many Earth-friendly alternatives there are. More »

Nails were huge this year, as evidenced by multiple appearances on our End of the Year Special! One of my favorite trends was matte nailpolish because, well, its kinda weird and ugly, and I like it!

Matte nails showed up on runways and rockstars long ago, but this year the cosmetics companies really ran with it by creating new lines of matte shades. Here are some of my favorites! More »

It may be hard to think about spring cleaning with the icy temperatures outside, especially if you live somewhere like NYC (or a day like today in L.A... Yes, I am being serious), but it is right around the corner, so why not get a jump start? I’m obviously not talking about actual cleaning, I am talking about spring cleaning for your face. More »

Despite being tragically named the 00s, some of the biggest stand-out trends of the decade had nothing to do with the number ‘0′ but rather the idea that the things you desired physically for yourself, were easily attainable. Clip it on, inject it, straighten it…beauty in the 00s meant defying your genetic make-up. Sometimes to an extreme extent. You’ll know what I mean with my list of Top 10 Beauty Trends of the Decade. Santa didn’t bring every gift on your list this year? Did he just forget the beauty products? Or did someone get you a gift and you swore you left their at home? Not to fear because LUSH is extending the season of giving for another week and from December 26th to January 5th, the homemade cosmetic company is running a special online promotion: More »

Last summer, Beyonce sported shiny silver on her hands. Brooke Shields work a metallic blue shade on her toes, and Brooke Burns wore silver. No, it wasn’t the return of the 80s, but rather a hot trend that was worn both on the runway, and on the red carpet by celebrities such as Lauren Conrad, Kate Winslet, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and so many more. Whether you love the look, or hate it, plenty of hot colors came out this year and they blend with most outfits. Although nearly every nail polish line has created amazing metallic shades (not going to name them all!), here are a few of my personal favorites: More »

The awesome thing about runway shows is that nothing really has to be wearable on the street. Designers send models down the runway in shoes that are nearly impossible to walk in, and clothing that sometimes looks like it belongs more in the bedroom than on the street (hello, lingerie trend of S/S 2010). Often times the makeup and hair looks are equally as ridiculous, but sometimes fun to try out in the real world! More »

Celebrities have an enormous effect over the trends that we all follow throughout the year. While it would be hard to detail all of the great (and crazy) celebrity beauty that we saw in 2009, I’ve picked out the top 5 lovely ladies that kept me amazed this year! More »

Maybe it has something to do with the recession or our newfound love for natural beauty. Whatever the case, we were all still wearing makeup in 2009, but we went for makeup that gave us a more natural look. You know, wearing makeup without looking like we were wearing makeup. Sounds like it could be a bit confusing, but it makes perfect sense!

Wouldn’t it be amazing to be a complete 100% natural beauty? As in, you roll out of bed in the morning and with no makeup on, your face is completely flawless? Well, there aren’t too many people like that out there (if any?). But there is plenty of makeup that will make you look like a natural beauty! Some of my celebrity role models for natural beauty in 2009 include Lauren Conrad, Nicole Kidman, and Kate Hudson. More »
