The eighties were filled with trends of our favorite pop culture icons. We rocked florescent and neon colored clothing because of Madonna. We worked out in spandex because of Olivia Newton John. We even copied Jennifer Beal’s moves in Flashdance by dancing like a maniac. But how has this decade affected the beauty trends that we see today?
Red Lips: Although luscious, pouty, red lips have been popular for decades, bold colors have characterized the eighties. Supermodel Gia Caranji and pop singer, Sade made their perfectly sculpted, colorful lips their signature look. Today, beauty icons like Rihanna and Angelina Jolie have kept this tradition alive.
Sculpted Eyes and Cheeks: The seventies disco era had a huge impact on makeup trends. Glittery gold eye shadow from lid to brow bone was a sensation that wasn’t easy to give up. This beauty trend was carried on into the eighties with a variety of bold colors. The eyes and cheeks were heavily sculpted to perfection using lavenders, purples, golds, and bronze eye shadows. Now cosmetic brands like Smashbox have launched products to make this entire look possible again. Smashbox has “Reign Eye Shadow Collection” which consists of six metallic luminous shades — also a perfect product for the smoky eye look.
Smoky Eyes: A timeless classic. 2009 beauty and fashion campaigns continued to recreate a modern version of this style, but instead of using dark colors there was an emphasis on a neutral palette consisting of tones of brown and beige.
Blue Nails: Black nail polish was the “in” color, but spring is approaching and blue is the new black. The intense blue shades leave us nostalgic for the eighties. Lancome makes the perfect vibrant blue nail polish, “Indigo Paris.”
Blue and Purple Eyeliner: Remember the popular girl in high school wearing the Jordache jeans and leg warmers while sporting the purple or blue eyeliner? This year Stila Cosmetics launched “Smudge Pot Gel Liner” in cobalt blue. Now everyone can embody the trend and reminisce over this eighties style.

Pompadours: Buster Poindexter made his mark on the eighties with his stylish suits and pompadour hairstyles. The beauty trends of today have adopted the look of a pompadour into a stylish modern up-do. Celebrities, like Gwen Stefani, made this their signature hairstyle.
