Despite being tragically named the 00s, some of the biggest stand-out trends of the decade had nothing to do with the number ‘0′ but rather the idea that the things you desired physically for yourself, were easily attainable. Clip it on, inject it, straighten it…beauty in the 00s meant defying your genetic make-up. Sometimes to an extreme extent. You’ll know what I mean with my list of Top 10 Beauty Trends of the Decade.

1. Hair/Eyelash Extensions: No one in the 00s ever ‘grew hair out.’ They clipped it or weaved it on. Celebrities such as Britney Spears grew a reputation for having visibly cheap hair extensions. Jessica Simpson has recently signed deals for her own line of hair extensions. The extensions don’t even stop at hair. Eyelash extensions have become quite the trend in Asia.

2. Japanese Straightening Perms: Speaking of Asia, the Japanese straight perm revolutionized the way we envisioned straight hair. Japanese straight perms boasted the effects of shinier, super stick straight hair. Perms weren’t necessarily about producing curls in the 00s, but the extreme opposite.

3. Lip Plumper products: Blame it on the popularity of Angelina Jolie (or Christina Aguilera) but there’s just no sorting out lip plumper products. There’s so many of them on the market, it’s actually daunting having to figure out which lip plumper is right for you. Personally, I’ve given up and accepted my fate.

4. Botox and Plastic Surgery: While I’ve given up and accepted my genetic fate, some women have resolved not to give up. Instead of settling with lip plumpers, it was (and still is) common for women to have botox injections to plump lips or diminish wrinkles. In some cases, simple botox injections were enough to pave the way for more plastic surgery procedures. TV shows such as Nip/Tuck, Extreme Makeover and Dr. 90210 emerged out of this trend.

5. Bronzer: If I were to continue to take cues from television, the amount of beach-based TV shows like MTV’s Laguna Beach or The OC that came out in the 00s is a great indicator of the fact that we all wanted to look like people of expendable income.

6. Retro Glam: 3 words: Dita von Teese. Okay, fine, more words: Retro glam was an easy go-to look that did well for red carpet events or photoshoots. Going the retro route was simple enough for busy people, yet still undeniably gorgeous. There’s a lot of power in just black eyeliner and red lipstick

7. Eyebrow Threading: Eyebrow threading is most likely one of the oldest beauty procedures in the world. Given the popularity of Gwen Stefani and her love for South Asian beauty, eyebrow threading emerged as an alternative to painful eyebrow waxing. Since the 00s, I’ve never gone back to waxing.

8. Self Tanner: Upon hearing reports of how unhealthy tanning can be in the 00s, self tanners sprung out with the promise of making you appear tan and in some cases, also protecting you from sun damage.

9. Youtube Beauty Tutorials: Gone are the days of you having to go to your local mall make-up counter to be taught how to put make-up on yourself. With the introduction of Youtube in the 00s, beauty video tutorials have made it incredibly easy for common people to learn expert make-up tips.

10. The Bob: Thanks to the 00s, one can no longer go to a stylist to request a bob without little detail. Bobs have been seen countless amount of times throughout the 00s, with each bob style different. The most popular bob styles have been seen on Rihanna, Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes.
