You probably have a routine for your makeup in the morning. Mine goes: concealer, tinted moisturizer, blush, eyelid primer, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara. And repeat. Given the often short amount of time that I have to get myself ready in the morning and my comfort level with the products that I already use, I pretty much give myself the same face every day. As I mentioned in my post about cleaning out your beauty products yesterday, I have about 15 different types of the same colors of eyeshadow and lip color because I know they look good on me. One of my resolutions this year is to go a little bit outside my comfort zone and spice up my makeup routine once in a while.
Try a New Color — One of the easiest ways to change your look is by trying a totally off the wall color. I think the most fun place to do this is on your eyes, because it is more subtle than a crazy lip color and the color can be more outrageous. My recommendation is to dig through a makeup palette that you already own and pick one of the colors that you haven’t really used. Then, use the color to line your eye with. You can do this with a product like Too Faced Liquif-eye, which will turn any powder into a waterproof liquid liner. In a pinch, I use a drop of Clear Eyes to achieve a similar (but not waterproof) effect. Try this with fun colors like deep reds, emerald greens, gold-yellows, and purples. This allows you to gradually work your way into using overall color and tests out the colors that look good on you!
Test a New Type of Product — We get stuck in the same beauty routine because we feel confident in using the tools that we are familiar with, but I’ll bet there are tons of things you’ve never tried before! Pick one or two types of products that you haven’t tried before, such as: brow pencils, cheek highlighter, eyelid primer, lip or cheek tint, or even a makeup tool like a new brush you’ve never used before. You might find yourself re-imagining your beauty routine based on the new looks you are able to create.
Get Inspired — Elle Magazine had a pretty awesome article this month about a beauty editor who tried a different makeup look for 21 days in a row. She took a lot of inspiration from the Spring 2010 runway shows, including a take on the 3.1 Phillip Lim lashes pictured here, and created her own versions of some of the looks. Some of the looks were really great, but some of them fell flat. This just goes to show that you will never know if something works for you unless you try it out! So the next time you are flipping through a magazine, checking out your favorite designer’s latest runway show, or reading your favorite blog (FlauntMe.com, of course!), take note of the things that you like and take some time to test drive the looks in the privacy of your own bathroom. You may be surprised at what happens!
