As everyone knows by now, the conditions in Haiti after the record-level earthquake this week are horrific. The death tolls are estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands, and many injured people are expected to die without proper treatment of their wounds. After all of the overwhelming news reports, speeches and photographs that we’ve been seeing and hearing over the past few days, it is important not to forget that this is not just about the magnitude of the disaster, but about all of the individual people who are suffering physically and mentally from injury, loss, and starvation. If you feel strongly about this tragedy, there are ways that you can help.

For the next 30 days, Bond No. 9, the NYC perfumery, is donating 10% of sales of their “The Scent of Peace” perfume to the Haitian relief effort. You can purchase the perfume at their stores in NYC, in Saks Fifth Avenue, or on their website. It is a pricey purchase ($150 for 50ml or $210 for 100ml), but at least some of the proceeds will benefit the effort.

If you’d rather just donate, try Yele Haiti. You can visit their website for an address to send donations to, or you can text YELE to 501501 to automatically donate $5 that will be charged to your cell phone bill. There are plenty of places collecting, just be sure to check out the validity of it before you donate so that you are sure that your money is going to use in a positive way for the people of Haiti.
