Who is Amanda Palmer? She is a singer/songwriter, one-half of the punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls, fiancée of graphic novelist Neil Gaiman, and Twitterholic. She also made headlines for the dress she wore at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. She is a lot of things, but what intrigues me about her most is actually her eyebrows.
I do not know what exactly to think of them, to be truthful. When I first saw them, I thought they looked like she drunkenly scribbled them on. However, upon closer inspection, I saw that there was an actual design to them. This changed my perspective, but not by much. I still have mixed emotions about them.
Curious, I searched the internet for more information about Amanda Palmer’s eyebrows. I came across the F.A.Q. section of The Dresden Dolls‘ website where there is a question about whether her eyebrows are tattooed on or not. This is her answer:
“No, I was born this way. I am a specially bred member of the Illuminati and they function sort of like alien bar codes. Every time I travel to the center of the earth I have to press my face up against a large glass cog with laser beams scanning my face to gain admittance. For those of you who want the look, though, I suggest a Mach 3 and Maybelline Liquid Eyeliner in Black or Dark Gray.”
Not surprisingly, I also came across two YouTube tutorials on how to draw my very own eyebrows just like hers.
What I can say about them is that they are very interesting aesthetically. Amanda Palmer is, by no means, a boring woman in personality, so I guess her eyebrows are an expression of who she is as a person. Like Jean Harlow, Edie Sedgwick, Brooke Shields, and Siouxsie Sioux from Siouxsie and the Banshees, her eyebrows are definitely a signature look of hers. Maybe someday they will become even more famous than she is, although I still think they will remain a mystery to me.
What are your thoughts about Amanda Palmer’s eyebrows? Would you be bold and crazy enough to imitate her look, or do you think they are just plain weird?
