Next week, a hearing will be held in Colorado to determine whether or not a new state bill will be passed. It’s called the Colorado Safe Personal Care Products Act, and if it’s passed, it will have a big effect on the beauty products that Colorado residents can find on the shelves at stores.
The bill aims to prohibit the sale of any personal care products that contain chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity, and would impose a $5,000- $10,000 fine on manufacturers who use such ingredients. An existing list of harmful chemicals will be used to determine which products stay and which ones will go.
As much as I love the idea of making the things that we use on our skin safer, I don’t see this bill being highly favored. While it might shed light on the fact that we aren’t always careful as consumers about what we use on our bodies, imagine suddenly not being able to purchase the shampoo or moisturizer that you’ve always used. If this is really an issue, why not ban the sale of cigarettes which are closely linked to the development of cancer?
The bill was created largely by Representative Diane Primavera, who is herself a cancer survivor. She claims that there is no reason that she should have developed cancer (no drinking, smoking, genetic history), and points to personal care products as the reason.
How would you feel if this bill passed where you live? Would you forego your favorite beauty products if you were told that they weren’t safe?
