Concealer is a makeup product that is typically used to brighten under the eye area. However, it can also be used to set eye shadow and lip products too. It is used to cover any discolorations on the face and conceal broken capillaries in the skin, usually on the cheeks and around the nose area.

Concealers are usually cream based, others types come in a tube that squeeze out. You can also purchase concealer pens and pencils. Usually they are cream based, they also come in a liquid form and sometimes in the shape of a pencil.

The texture starts off creamy and sets with powder, some have a cream to matte powder finish. The coverage can be sheer or opaque.

How to choose the right shade:

There are several factors to consider when choosing the right concealer. Texture and consistency is will determine how much coverage you will get. If you have extremely dark circles under the eyes, consider using a cream based product that will set opaque and give off full coverage.

Typically yellow based concealers work best to cover under eye darkness. The color you choose should be 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation. To test a shade, swatch the color on your jaw line by your ear or on the back of your hand on a vein.

Darker skin tones will require a concealer with a more red or orange colored base.

Color correcting concealers also help with different camouflaging effects. If you suffer from redness, try a corrector with green undertones.

Concealer is always try-on first type purchase, everyone has different concerns and needs. The perfect concealer must be personalized by your own desired results.

How to use:

Some women prefer a brush, when using potted concealers. Others use sponges or just their fingertips. I prefer to use a brush for more control of the coverage I want.

Apply the concealer using a brisk sweeping motion until all the edges are blended well. Use this under and over eyelids, around the sides of the nose and in the cheeks too. Use a sponge to blend all the concealer smoothly into your skin before applying your makeup. Follow up with some powder to set the concealer. This will ensure creasing and long-wearing effects of the concealer.

Liquid formulas can easily be applied with both a brush or sponge. I prefer sponges, because they are typically sheer to finish and it’s much easier to blend in.

Pencils are usually creamy and opaque like most cream based concealers. So again, I prefer a brush for control over coverage and blending. Instead of applying the concealer on the brush itself, I simply use it after to blend away the concealer smooth and evenly. Most folks find this product easiest to use, because it’s in a pencil form.
