It has become quite common to see the word “Organic” on our beauty and skincare products. The green craze that has swept over the world within the past few years has definitely had an effect on the minds of consumers — I’ll admit that I feel like I’m doing something good for myself when I buy a product that is labeled “organic”. However, since there are no laws that prevent a company from calling their product organic, many cosmetics companies use it for marketing purposes even if it isn’t true. Consumer Reports, the non-profit publishing company, and the Organic Consumers Association filed a suit today with the FTC to try to change that.

The two organizations are concerned that the mislabeling of products could lead to consumers mistrusting the word “organic” all together. This definitely makes me think twice about how many of my products that say they are organic are actually organic.

It will be interesting to see what happens — I wouldn’t object to legislation that required some kind of official seal of approval for our beauty products! What are your thoughts?
