I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a little overwhelmed by this whole heath care bill. I feel like no matter where I turn, all I can get is a biased opinion of why this is either the beginning of something amazing or the descent into socialism. I should stop being lazy and look into it more so that I can actually have an opinion, right? I feel like there are so many little details that I keep missing, including one that I heard about a few days ago: tax on tanning services.
According to a report on CNN Money, the tax will go into effect on July 1, 2010 and will tack on 10% to your booth bill. Needless to say, owners of tanning salons are very worried about the outcome of this tax since consumers are already cutting back on unnecessary cosmetic services. The tax is expected to generate over $2.7 billion over ten years.
This tax won’t really affect me personally, since I rarely visit the tanning booth, but I know a lot of people who are going to be upset about this. After the report on skin cancer that I wrote about last week, I don’t think it’s a terrible thing that less people will be tanning; however I do think that going tanning is a choice that you can make for yourself and for those who swear by it, this tax won’t be doing them a favor.
