The oil spill situation on the Gulf Coast right now is pretty serious. Reports are saying that the mess is only spreading, and once the oil is in the water it is very hard to get it out. Today I read some interesting news about a cleaning method — human hair!
There is an organization called Matter of Trust which collects human and animal hair from hairdressers and groomers. The hair is woven into mats and stuffed into nylons, and then used to block and soak up oil as it flows in. It seems like a lot of work, but it is a very eco-friendly solution to the problem. It will be interesting to see how much this actually helps once they start using the hair mats, but in the meantime you could always use this as an excuse to get your haircut for a worthy cause!
