DIY beauty has been a huge thing for a while now. I haven’t actually jumped on all of it myself. I have tried the natural facials mask recipes, but I have never made my own eyeshadow. As an artist, I find myself mixing and re-creating new colors all the time on shoots, but how cool would it be if I could make my own eyeshadows?

After some research I found that it could be done quite easily in your kitchen. Here is a simple tutorial I found on ehow.com, (written by Rhonda Burton) that shows you how it all works.

First, gather the things you will need:

• Small jar or sifter
• Mortar and pestle
• Spoon
• Micronized titanium dioxide
• Magnesium stearate
• Bismuth oxychloride
• Sericite mica
• Iron oxide
• Clear jojoba oil
• Essential oil

Step one:
Pick one or more colors, or in this case your iron oxide pigments. Already have in mind what texture you want, whether it is matte or shimmery. These decisions determine whether you need pearl for shimmer or matte sericite mica for a matte finish.

Step two:
Rhonda says in this step, that you can add a scent to your eyeshadow but to stay away from cinnamon, mint or citrus essential oils, they irritate the eye area. I think I will skip this step, when it comes time for me to do it.

Step three:
Mix 3 tbsp. of micronized titanium dioxide, 1 1/2 tsp. of magnesium stearate, and 1/2 tsp. of bismuth oxychloride together with a mortar and pestle. This is very important, you must measure carefully these amounts.

Step four:
Add in 2 tsp. (more for deeper color) of iron oxide pigment and 2 1/2 tsp. of sericite mica, ensuring the white powders become blended with the colored powders.

Step five:
Blend in 1/4 tsp. of clear jojoba oil and 3 to 5 drops of essential oils with the powders, stirring lightly with a spoon. Be careful not to crush the mica powders while stirring in the oils. Essential oil can be bought from online retailers such as Wholesale Supplies Plus or From Nature With Love.

Step six:
Put the eyeshadow into a small sifter jar or plastic container. You can get containers from a supplier such as Wholesale Supplies Plus or Kangaroo Blue.
