To celebrate its 25th anniversary issue, Elle magazine released four different covers, with the theme of young women who were “changing the world.” The four stars who got this honor were Gabourney Sidibé, Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, and Lauren Conrad. Everything sounds fine except the part about photo editing. In Sidibé’s cover, her skin looked significantly lighter than usual. In addition to that issue, her image was cropped at chest level while pictures of other three celebrities were shot in full length.

Regarding the two issues, Elle commented that “nothing out of the ordinary” has been done.

Elle also added, “We have four separate covers this month and Gabby’s cover was not retouched any more or less than the others” it read.”

“We had 25 cover-worthy subjects in our portfolio and we chose Gabby because of who she is.”

“We shot this as a story of exuberant young women changing the world. If you take a look at the portfolio, each of the women were shot in different ways and for different reasons.”

This actually isn’t the first time that happened because in 2008, L’Oreal was accused of whitening Beyoncé’s skin in her haircare product endorsement picture.

Take a look at other suspicious pictures below:

I think they are just making up excuses because one can’t possibly have two different skin tones. What are they trying to say? Having lighter skin is superior? The whole issue makes me just sad.

What do you think?

This is pretty sad—when will people understand that beauty comes in different colors?
