The American Medical Association is asking the ad industry to stop tweaking photographs because of the unhealthy message they send, such as women with 12-inch waists.

Advertisers commonly alter photographs to enhance the appearance of models’ bodies, and such alterations can contribute to unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image — especially among impressionable children and adolescents,” the AMA said in a statement. A large body of literature links exposure to media-propagated images of unrealistic body image to eating disorders and other child and adolescent health problems.

At its annual meeting, the AMA encourages advertising companies to work with both public and private sector organizations to develop guidelines for advertisements, especially those appearing in teen-oriented publications. This concerns all ads, not only ones displaying female models.

The above ad created an uproar in the fall of 2009, when BoingBoing posted the image, and Lauren tried to sue the site for copyright infringement. This only led to furthered public interest and outrage over the dangerously thin looking model and, eventually, the clothing company “released an apology.” That apology from Lauren said:

For over 42 years we have built a brand based on quality and integrity. After further investigation, we have learned that we are responsible for the poor imaging and retouching that resulted in a very distorted image of a woman’s body. We have addressed the problem and going forward will take every precaution to ensure that the caliber of our artwork represents our brand appropriately.

Photoshop Disasters, a website that showcases “terrible Photoshop from various kinds of digital and printed media,” also featured the photo, believing that it is one of the photos that represents “the best of the worst Photoshop.” The AMA, while having no real teeth in the matter, is quite firm about where it stands.

That picture is ridiculous. May I point out that the head looks bigger than her waist? I don’t even understand how that looks attractive. This is a problem that has plagued the general population for far too long. Hopefully the AMA will go somewhere with their proposal.

On a scale of 1-10, how well do you think that advertisement will entice viewers to purchase Ralph Lauren clothing?

o.O thank tou for sharing :o

The picture looks so weird like her head is big, then her boobs, then her stomach is so tiny her waist is also. If I saw that somewhere I would already know that that isn’t her real body. They are gonna make kids who wanna lose weight have problems.

asdfghjkl?! Shes so skinny it makes me shivver!!!!

Dang… That’s so out of proportion… O_O
It looks WAYYY too skinny.....

Wow I can’t believe that ad was published like that. Fine I understand companies wanting their models to look the best they can even relying on photoshop to make it work. But that doesn’t mean I agree with it. I’m glad that AMA is stepping in to tackle this problem since young girls are getting the wrong message from such ads. Instead of a skinny look how about a healthy one.

damn her waist looks sooo fake!

WTH. That picture is so scary that it’s obvious it was just edited. I mean, do they really think people with that kind of body proportion exists? O__O

sometimes they went overboard with the tweaking the photos and it end up looking ridiculous..dunno why people would want to follow this..

that picture is so fake looking that it is funny.

wow omg her waist O.O
dang that’s heaps small

i’m more disturbed by how skinny she looks in it.  Ralph Lauren is a prominent brand name so i doubt that if she had a little more substance on her, their sales would go down.  if anything, it would look more realistic!
