Tousled, sexy waves are always popular, so it was exciting to see it with a revamped look on the Spring 2012 runways. However, the new, relaxed version has a beachy feel that’s completely fall appropriate.

The trick to achieving this hairstyle is to make sure your waves are just rough enough to look cool, but still sweater-appropriate. They must not be too perfect or so extreme that it appears as if you just came off a windy beach. “It’s got a hippie vibe,” said hairstylist Guido of the hairstyles above. “It’s young and innocent.”

To create the effect, Guido did not curl the entire head of hair. Instead, he wrapped random pieces around a 1.5-inch curling iron, working from about ear level down, with the iron held horizontally.

Then, he sprayed the ends in Redken Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist to achieve “an oily, wet effect.” Still, you should only use a little spritz if you don’t want to go into full hippie mode!
