When you hear the words, “Summer Love,” what do you think of? The first thought that popped into my head was KPop group Code V. Why the randomness, you ask? Well, it’s not so random if I tell you that it’s because of their 2011 summer single “Summer Love.” Summer is often thought to be sweet and full of sunshine-y love opportunities. To get into the summer mood I miss so much already, I decided to try the NYX Round Lipstick in Summer Love.
Here’s the general round lipstick description that NYX’s site provides: “NYX Round Lipstick is our classic lipstick for all-year round. The mineral-based emollient formula offers a beautiful velvet texture, saturated color and it resists wear and smudging. It’s your go-to lipstick. From Pure Nude to Pink Lyric to Chic Red, Round Lipstick is available in a jaw-dropping 144 shades.”
What’s neat about the NYX lipsticks is that you can see the stick’s color at the bottom without even opening them. Beware, the color pretty much doesn’t turn up that exact color on the lips, though. I’m not one into flashy and bright colors when it comes to makeup, so this particular color really impressed me…after it went onto the lips. It started with simple curiosity, of course. Summer Love looks a little plain in the lipstick tube, a shade that is somewhat nude or beige with a tiny hint of peachy pink. There’s a cosmetic-sweet scent to Summer Love, but nothing enough to agitate or drive me away from wanting to try it.
Swatch:The texture is creamy, not waxy-feeling at all. I could see small shimmery pigments in the lipstick, but you’d have to stick your head up to it really close to even tell. Expecting a beige-brownish color to show up on my lips, I applied a thin layer.
The result was rather “mind-blowing,” as the even color on my lips definitely did not look like anything the physical lipstick did. A warm shimmer coated a light frosty pink, along with a pinch of gold glimmer. I want to say metallic too, but I wouldn’t go that far. It complimented my cool skin tone rather well, and though my natural lip color is darker than this shade, Summer Love did not make my lips look dead. IN other words, don’t let it wash-out your face.
Sadly, this formula dries the lips. I had perfectly hydrated lips and lip balm on before applying, but the super I-is-going-to-dry-your-lips-rwar lipstick had my lips screaming for the moisture rescue team about twenty minutes after application. That’s the major downfall for most lipsticks out there, so I can’t pick on just this one. Also, although the color did not smudge, the color did start to lose it’s original essence after an hour or two.
Overall, love this product! I would recommend it for those who wish to carry a little summer with them even when it’s cold, or who like cooler and more natural-ish shades of lip color. Oh, don’t forget that skin color is also an important factor for choosing the perfect shade(s)! Go here for purchasing details and the rest of the varying shades you can choose from. Only $4, yo!
*Btw, the whole time I was writing this, I conveniently had Code V’s “Summer Love” playing in the background on repeat. I need a life.
