Lipgloss is essential to make supply and shiny lips, but there are some interesting facts that most people don’t know. Read on to find out 10 interesting (and possibly surprising!) facts about lipgloss.

1. Lipgloss was made by a man!

Max Factor invented lipgloss in 1930 and when he sold it commercially, it was called “X-Rated.” His reason for concocting this semi-liquid, shiny substance was to make lips glossy or shiny for films. His name is synonymous with makeup - he even coined the word “makeup”, because he was famous for “making-up a woman’s face” beautifully.

2. Max Factor also created lipstick and the mascara wand. He is also credited for formulating the first camera worthy makeup in 1912, the original pan cake makeup in the 1930’s and the first under eye concealer stick in 1954.

3. Max Factor Co., the first company to patent and sell lipgloss, is now a division of Procter and Gamble, after it was bought by the big company in 1991.

4. The original Max Factor X-Rated lipgloss was sold up to 2003, when Procter and Gamble retired the product.

This is one of the first advertisements for Max Factor’s lipgloss:

5. The original Max Factor X-Rated lipgloss was colourless and intended to mimic the sexiness of a wet and shiny pout. With on-screen cosmetic demands and application woes, lipgloss helped Max Factor add the necessary shine to create an attention-grabbing pout without endless layers of colour.

6. The first retractable lipgloss was invented by Angie Parlionas in 2004, under the company name YOYO Lip Gloss.

The lipgloss is connected to a retractable cord that can be attached at the waist, so you will never lose your lipgloss! Unless you lose your pants…

7. Lipgloss containing sunscreen was first advertised by actress Lillian Gish.

8. Lip Smacker, the first flavoured lipgloss, was introduced by Bonne Bell in 1973.

9. Tarte Cosmetics and BORBA Cosmeceuticals brought nutraceutical lipgloss (providing benefits of antioxidants to your lips) to the market.

10. “Plumping” lipglosses contain ingredients that make the lips appear softer and plumper. These are cheaper and usually harmless alternatives to collagen, Juvederm or fat injections. However, they are not as effective as chemical injections and the effects are temporary.

I never knew lipgloss had such a rich history, did you?
