Gluten-free products has always been around, but mainly for food. Nowadays, gluten-free beauty products have been turning up on the market too. Some of these brands are the well-known bareMinerals, and other ones like Afterglow Cosmetics and eos‘ lip balm.
Many people are switching gluten-free diets due to allergies or their wish to. But does this mean gluten-free is the next big step in the beauty industry?
No. Well that’s what Chanel’s first-ever consulting dermatologist, Dr. Amy Wechsler, said.
Gluten-free foods and gluten-free beauty products are different. Not just because one you eat and the other you use, but one is regulated, the other isn’t. All gluten-free foods are strictly regulate so they follow certain standards and process.
But there is no government body that checks up on these gluten-free products, this applies to vegan and organic products too. Dr. Wechsler gave an example, saying, “In the US, if something like and egg is labelled organic, it’s very clear what that means. But if a skincare product is labelled organic is the US, it is not at all clear what that means.”
It is also known that gluten-free products don’t really matter, as the products won’t be reabsorbed into the bloodstream, so most people with sensitivities aren’t affected. If you do have a wheat allergy, you should proceed with caution. You should read the labels and not assume something is gluten-free.
So what do you think? Gluten or gluten-free?
