Most of the time, I end up picking my nail polish based on my mood. Though I was always intrigued to pick up those darker colors that many label as “Fall-esque.” Hearing a bit about OPI’s “You Don’t Know Jacques!,” it definitely looked the part of a Fall color - sort of taupe and dark without going overboard to the black color spectrum. Definitely a different color that I wouldn’t expect to pick up and something that I couldn’t wait to try out.

Shade: At first look, it seems to present itself to be a brown polish, which isn’t generally my first thought of a color choice for my nails. But on a second look, you can see that there are some intricate purple and gray undertones, which ends up making a bit more interesting than just “brown.” Though the more accurate color description for this is taupe, which is generally a neutral eyeshadow color that I hear a lot of people rave about as being pretty universally flattering.

But seeing it for nails, I was surprised that it was able to work its unexpected charm here too. I think that’s one of the things I liked most about the shade, since it went from bottle to nail with a lot of versatility and seemed to change in color depth, depending on the type of light I saw my painted nails in.

Application + Survival: With OPI’s general and decent-sized brush, applying this polish was no problem. Though with just one coat, it wasn’t as opaque as it could be to get away with just one coat. But with two, it was able to give me the right amount and a solid display of color. Not that big, since the formula is really smooth and doesn’t cause any problems.

Overall: I was plesantly surprised to find that I liked this color a lot. Especially considering that I’m not one to really follow season trends for my nail color choices, I can definitely see myself wearing this to put myself in a more Fall/Winter mood for the rest of this season. Being a taupe neutral, it is also really wearable to match pretty much any outfit, day or night, which is one of the things I liked the most. It’s able to let me sport an almost “mood ring” version of dark nails that is a bit more interesting and lets me do so without having to reach for a black, which can get a bit boring.

These are definitely a bit more elegant and I have to admit that I’m smitten with “Jacques” now!

Score: 5/5
