Recently, the South American division of Sony’s music corporation got a fine of 1.2 Billion Brazilian Real (approximately $650 thousand). The song was by an artist named Francisco Everardo Oliveira Silva, or just Tiririca, and the song was released in 1997. The song’s title was “Veja os Cabelos Dela,” or “Look At Her Hair” in English. You might be asking “What about the lyrics are so bad?” well let’s take a look:
Look look look look look at her hair
It looks like a scouring pad for pots and pans
It looks like a scouring pad for pots and pans
When she goes by, she catches my attention
But her hair just isn’t right
Her stench almost made me faint
Look, I can’t take it, her smell is so bad
Look look look look look at her hair
It looks like a scouring pad for pots and pans
I told her to take a bath
But she’s stubborn and doesn’t listen to me
This black woman stinks, she stinks horribly
Stinking beast, smells worse than a skunk
The song is basically dissing black womens’ hair and hygiene, and people have been making this a hot issue seeking justice. Sony tried to defend themselves by say that in Brazil both white women and black women get treated this way. The money being collected will go towards Brazil’s Diffused Rights Fund of the Ministry of Justice, but no further information about what they plan to do with the money has been released.
Honestly, I’m shocked at such horrible lyrics and I think they’re wrong no matter who they’re directed towards. What are your opinions on this matter?
