If you ever wanted to attend a makeup class, now you can! Of course, this is totally different than what you’re probably thinking of. Mount St. Mary’s Catholic School in Leeds, England is in a little bit of trouble from parents for offering makeup classes to its 14 and 15 year old students.
Why you may ask are they offering these lessons? Well, it is to “teach children how to make a good first impression and also boost their self-confidence,” however, many parents disagree as they think it’s the inappropriate place and time to learn this.
One mother states: “It’s totally inappropriate. Advising on makeup is something that should be done by parents at home, not a school.”
Another one says: “It’s far too early for 14-year-olds to start worrying about things like makeup. They’re just children.”
I don’t know about you but at the age of 14, I was always looking for ways to cover up my acne and pimples for photo day. Besides, some girls start wearing makeup a lot earlier than the age of 14.
The makeup lessons are an hour in length and are given by a professional makeup artist that teaches the girls about the right makeup for different occasions. Although they technically shouldn’t force the girls to start wearing makeup, the teachers at the school see nothing wrong with it:
I’m a maths teacher and wouldn’t expect a child to be able to solve an algebraic equation without being taught first how to do it. It’s so that they’re wearing appropriate makeup instead of three-inch thick foundation. We’ve had no negative feedback and students had to have permission to stay behind, so we have to assume parents are supportive.
I think that the option for girls to learn about makeup from a makeup professional is a really golden opportunity, but perhaps it should be open to girls of 16 and older as they usually start looking for part-time jobs then and could get a bit of makeup advice versus just learning off of YouTube, etc.
How do you feel about these lessons?
