What sparked my initial interest in Holika Holika’s Enamel Magicara Mascara was that it reminded me of Hourglass Cosmetic’s super popular Film Noir Lash Laquer. If you’re not familar with the Film Noir Lash Laquer, it’s basically a lash top coat that’s supposed to go over mascara to make your lashes ultra glossy and dark. I’ve yet to try it because I was hoping for a mascara that already makes your lashes a dramatic glossy black. So far, it seems as if Holika Holika’s Enamel Magicara Mascara may be an answer. As a mascara, it lengthens, volumizes, curls and coats your lashes with some sort of enamel formula that makes them glossy.

According to Holika Holika, the Enamel Magicara attributes its shine to a formula including diamonds, amelthyst, pearl powder, minerals and ocean water. Can you tell? Not really, but it is shiny.

Packaging

Going off of Holika Holika’s whimsical witch theme, the Enamel Magicara Mascara is an iridescent dark blue with a gold print featuring starbursts. In other words, it’s too freakin’ cute:

The Enamel Magicara Mascara boasts two different wands for two different purposes. The Volume & Curling Wand is your standard mascara wand only, it’s not covered in mascara comb teeth. Instead, it’s only got one row of spiraled mascara comb teeth:

In a way, it kind of looks like a super skinny, long eyebrow comb. That said, this wand has got to be the most unique mascara wand I’ve ever seen. Since the design is so unique, it’s important to understand how it works in order to maxmimize the effects of the mascara. Luckily, it’s not too hard to understand. The first step in using the Enamel Magicara Volume & Curling mascara is to coat and boost your lashes entirely with the bare side of the wand. Then use the opposite side with the spiraled teeth to comb and separate your lashes upwards. True, this defies the logic of all mascara wands out there, but trust me … using it any other way will only end up looking weird.

Color

Blacker than your blackest mascara and super glossy. Kind of like an old Hollywood starlette’s lashes.

Scent

Nada.

Performance

Before the Enamel Magicara Mascara:

After:

Volume, check. Glossy, dark lashes, check. Curling, check. The only complaint that I have about this mascara isn’t so much a complaint, just a note that traditional mascara wand users should observe. Since the Volume & Curling Magicara Mascara features the weird wand that’s blank on one side and combed on the other, it might feel weird to use after the first few tries. I’m used to mascara wands that are combed all over with which you need to wiggle the wand up to apply. With the Magicara wand, you need to boost and coat then comb up. If you can get over the slight weirdness, then this mascara will work for you!

If you’re interested in the Long & Curling Enamel Magicara, no worries. The wand looks pretty normal.
