When you read a lot about beauty like I do, you begin to realize that people generally fall under one of two splurge categories: salon manicures or nail polish purchases. I’ve rarely come across a woman who doesn’t love the idea of getting her nails done, but some of those women prefer to build their home collections rather than pick from a salon’s colors. More »

This week, I had the chance to sit down with Hibba Kipal, a fantastic hair removal specialist with an organic salon, Hibba NYC, in SoHo. She learned the art of threading as a young girl in India, and now she offers sugaring and waxing as well. With bathing suit and short season upon us, it can become a pain to keep up with hair removal. If you are thinking of trying salon hair removal but you are nervous about the process, read on for Hibba’s tips! More »

When it comes to my first brazilian wax experience, only one word describes how I felt leading up to that experience: Nervous. My curiosity prior to this experience lead me down a twisted road of mixed Internet reviews. Some women claim it to be far worse than child birth and while some…not so much. More »

Although the debris of the earthquake in Haiti has slid out of view on our television screens, the reality of it is still there. Many people are living in makeshift tents constructed from debris, but a report from NPR sheds a little bit of hope on the situation — there are many beauty salons opening in the midst of all the destruction. A lot of my childhood has been under the influence of old wives’ tales my mother brought with her from the Philippines. One such wives’ tale involves hair dye. According to my mom, hair dye causes cancer. The irony in this, is that my mother dyes her hair regularly and has over the years, achieved blonde hair. This past weekend, I tested this wives’ tale and dyed my virgin black hair. At a non-English speaking Korean salon. More »

It has been a while since I’ve been able to get back to Hello Beautiful salon in Brooklyn to get my nails done. I really like getting Calgel on my nails, since my natural nails are sort of weak and break so easily. Calgel is a really great alternative to acrylic or traditional UV gel because it soaks off in acetone and requires only a little buffing before application, so it isn’t damaging and there is no drilling involved! Fans of What Not to Wear on TLC might remember the hairstylist Nick Arrojo. I used to love watching him do his hair styling thing on the show, and I’ve always felt like the show was never the same after he left. Now, it seems that he’ll be back on reality TV on a new NBC show. More »

I’m one of those people who swears by salon-quality shampoos, and ever since I’ve been getting my hair highlighted, I try to purchase shampoos that will keep my blonde highlights bright and fresh. When I saw Pantene’s Blonde Highlighting Expressions shampoo on sale, I decided to give it a go. It’s not salon-quality, but I wanted to see how it worked. More »

My obsession with my nails goes way back to my days as an elementary school kid. I still vividly remember the day that two malicious classmates looked at my nails and then at their own, declaring that mine were “flat, short, ugly and like boy nails” while theirs were rounded and shaped. My little second-grade heart broke at the thought that I had boy nails because, of course, I had never thought of this before.

Fast-forward to my adolescence and further frustration with my nails. They are so thin that I could never get acrylics without destroying them. I tried all kinds of topcoats enriched with vitamins and keratin and every nail-strengthening ingredient, but nothing ever worked. Then I discovered Calgel. More »
